Joel and Rick meet working a summer job and bond over their love for fitness and passion for helping people. They become best friends and joke that one day they should open their own gym.
Together they open Hydra CrossFit, in Stratford Ontario, in a 1,600sq/ft dingy warehouse with all the equipment they could buy (which was not a lot).
The local start up grows organically and becomes one of Stratford’s favourite places for fitness.
Joel takes over sole ownership of the gym as Rick decides to take a job opportunity in England. The two are still best friends to this day.
A new gym is built to bring a bigger and better experience to the members of the gym and the community.
The global pandemic threatens to erase all the hard work Hydraletes have done, but we take it outside and keep people fit and healthy during the chaos.
Realizing another dream, Hydra opens its doors in St Marys, marking the second location for Hydra. Hydraletes now have two locations to train at with one membership.
I am a Stratford native, born and raised, in arenas and fields is where I spent most of my younger days. I have always loved being around people and had a passion for athletics. I decided to pursue my passion and create the dream job of coaching fitness. I am obsessed with getting the most out of life and love to inspire others to do so as well. Every one comes into the gym to get aesthetic goals but the best part of the job is seeing the shift in mindset and inner confidence that comes with pushing your limits.
Leaving people better than you found them.
I never forget a face or a name. Test me, I dare you.
A couple of beers and some local takeout with friends.
I come from a career in Law Enforcement with years of training and experience in adult learning, leadership and coaching. I always look forward to making your workout at Hydra the best hour of your day.
Coaching and watching athletes try a new skill that really challenges them and puts them out of their comfort zone.
Passing on knowledge.
Anything chocolate and a nice glass of wine.
Staying active has always been a big part of my life. I am a black belt in taekwondo and have competed in several marathons, duathlons and triathlons. I love hanging out with my 2 teenagers, cooking delicious food and working with people with special needs as an education assistant.
Watching people’s eyes light up after they do something new for the first time.
Friendly in all situations.
Red wine and ice cream.
Growing up I played a variety of sports and activities but my main focus was hockey. When competitive sports came to an end I turned to the weight room and since then have fallen in love with the training process. I always knew growing up I wanted to help and serve others and this passion for training gave me a way to do that.
Seeing people achieve things they once thought was impossible.
Adapting to the specific needs of a member.
Sour candy.
